Do you ever wish your problems could be solved overnight? While this is mostly a pipe dream, in the world of optometry, it might be a possibility. Orthokeratology, also known as Ortho-K, uses specialty lenses to help reshape the cornea and improve vision. These lenses are worn while you sleep, so your vision is literally being transformed overnight!
What conditions can Ortho-K treat?
Ortho-K will not correct all vision problems, but it can aid in the treatment of a variety of conditions, including:
- Myopia, or near-sightedness
- Hyperopia
- Astigmatism
While other treatments for these conditions, such as LASIK and PRK, are only available to adults, Ortho-K can be an effective solution for patients of all ages. In fact, studies have shown that Ortho-K can actually help slow the progression of myopia in children. Ortho-K is an excellent option for children who wish to have an alternative to glasses or contacts.
Is Ortho-K safe?
While Ortho-K wasn’t officially used until the 1990s, it is derived from research that dates back to the 1940s, so the technique is not as new as you might think. Medical and technological innovations have allowed this technique to become an option for at-home eye care, and with the proper precautions, a safe option for patients of all ages.
Risks associated with Ortho-K are mostly related to infection, which you can avoid with the proper care and cleaning of your lenses. Always make sure to wash your hands thoroughly before handling the lenses and keep routine eye appointments to help maintain proper eye care and hygiene habits. Before receiving Ortho-K lenses, you will want to talk with your doctor about whether this form of treatment will fit your lifestyle and needs.
What can I expect from treatment?
While results can vary from patient to patient, most patients will reach the maximum results after two weeks of wearing the lenses. However, some patients may have maximum vision correction sooner. It may take up to 3 different lenses before finding the right prescription for you to reach the desired vision correction. Once your prescription is determined, you will wear the lenses each night to maintain vision correction. The effects of the lenses can last for up to 2 days, but you should continue wearing your lenses every night unless otherwise directed by your prescriber.
